She’s fast becoming one of Australia’s most successful exports, and Margot Robbie is doing her bit to help her countrymen be better understood by the rest of the world.
The Gold Coast-born actress graces the cover of Vanity Fair magazine this month, and in an accompanying video released Thursday, she translates some common phrases that non-Australians are often baffled by.
Just when you thought the Suicide Squad star couldn’t be any more down to earth (she and boyfriend Tom Ackerley live in a share house in London, and she recently confessed to sneaking off the Tarzan set to go to the pub) she utters the sentence “This arvo we’re gonna go to the bottle-o and grab a couple of tinnies.”
She also clears up common misinterpretations of Aussie slang by Americans, such as ‘thong’, and the subtle but crucial difference between ‘avo’ and ‘arvo’.
However, Margot is completely stumped when it comes to ‘doovalacky’, saying between laughs “I have never used that word in my life, I have no idea what it means.” According to Urban Dictionary, it’s a “general term for an unknown item … used whenever you can’t remember what something is called.”
That’s a pretty vague definition at best, so there’s no need to revoke her Australian citizenship just yet.
