American rapper Mac Miller has died at age 26 of a drug overdose, TMZ reports.
According to the website, police said Miller passed away in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon local time – AM Saturday Australian Eastern Standard Time.
Miller released his debut studio album, Blue Slide Park in 2011, but he was skyrocketed to international fame by his relationship with Ariana Grande.
After years of online flirting and rumours, the couple went public with their relationship in August 2016. They were together until around May of this year, when Ariana confirmed the couple had split, calling the relationship “toxic”.
Miller was arrested for a DUI hit-and-run on May 17, in which he totalled his car, soon after.
When a Twitter user criticised Grande, saying she had clearly left Miller at a time when he was struggling, she replied:
“I have cared for him and tried to support his sobriety and prayed for his balance for years (and always will of course) but shaming/blaming women for a man’s inability to keep his s*** together is a very major problem,” the 25-year-old said.
“Let’s please stop doing that. Of course I didn’t share about how hard or scary it was while it was happening but it was. I will continue to pray from the bottom of my heart that he figures it all out and that any other woman in this position does as well.”
In July, Miller broke his silence on the split, telling Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio program he was happy Ariana had found love with Pete Davidson, who she became engaged to within weeks of splitting from Miller.
“You know, like, I was in love with somebody,” the rapper said overnight.
“We were together for two years. We worked through good times, bad times, stress, and everything else. And then it came to an end and we both moved on. And it’s that simple you know.
“I am happy for her moving forward with her life, just as I’m sure she is [for] me.”
Miller was due to go on tour next month.
