We have a little theory that the musician or the actress with the most elaborate dress is subconsciously prepared to win an award at any given awards show. Be it a golden statue, a gramophone or a moonman, it’s a silly, unsupported notion but for the most part, it works (Hello Nicole Kidman in Givenchy for the Golden Globes). Seeing Lorde in red Valentino on the Grammy’s carpet in NYC on Sunday night seems to support our made-up rule, only this wasn’t the headline.

Instead, outrage across the internet spread as it was revealed all of the male nominees for Album Of The Year would be performing – Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino and Jay Z – but Lorde, the only female in to be nominated in the category was not asked to perform. Well, according to her mother anyway. Sonia Yelich made her feelings known and posted a picture of a New York Times article with a pen outlining the following paragraph:

“Of the 899 people nominated in the last six Grammy Awards, the report found, 9 percent were women. (This year, Lorde is the only woman nominated for album of the year; she is not scheduled to perform.” Yelich captioned the tweet “this says it all.”

Lorde’s stylist, Karla Welch, also took to social media to vent her opinion. “…so like how @vogue pointed out… I sort of say BS to the Grammy folks on the lack of a solo performance spot to the only female nominee for album of the year. #timesup memo didn’t make it to you?” A hashtag also fired up online titled #GrammysSoMale.

Grammy’s producer Ken Ehrlich did address the disappointment. “I don’t know if it was a mistake,” he told Variety. “These shows are a matter of choices. We have a box and it gets full. She had a great album. There’s no way we can really deal with everybody.”

Lorde has since responded on Twitter: “If you’re debating whether or not I can murder a stage… come and see it for yourself” with a link to her tour. Well what are you waiting for? Buy her tickets already.
