Nobody could blame Lorde for not wanting to talk about Taylor Swift ever again.

The singer issued an apology on Twitter after a comment she made about her famous friend in an interview with Sunrise’s David Koch was widely misinterpreted.

Kochie asked Lorde what it was like to find herself at the same level as artists she admires.

“The second you think too hard about it you just go insane so it’s best to be like, ‘We’re in wonderland and that’s just what happens around here.’

“Like also, I don’t hang out with these people at all, I’ve said hi…” she continues, before Koch cuts her off with “Hang on, you’re part of Taylor’s squad!”

To which Lorde replied:

“I mean, you make friends in different places but for the most part I’m not like, calling up my idols for advice necessarily.”

Many took that comment as a swipe at Swift, and a sign that their friendship isn’t as tight as it once was. But hours after the social media storm began, Lorde clarified her comment with a statement posted on Twitter.

“Taylor is a dear friend. I love her very much,” she began.

“In the interview I had just been talking about Bowie and Patti Smith – those were the ‘idols’ I was referring to that I was saying I’m not friends with, not Taylor!”

The Green Light singer also addressed the speculation that Taylor’s squad – her close-knit circle of loyal friends – is falling apart.

“I’ve always found people’s perception of this ‘squad’ idea frustrating … It was never some exclusive club or secret society, but a wide circle of people, some of whom I know, and some who I’ve never met, like most wide groups of friends.

“Forgive me for the mild eye roll I popped when it was brought up, as if we’re all blood members of a secret cult.”

To stamp out any rumours of a rift between her and Taylor, she confirmed:

“I want to say one more time that Taylor has been there for me in all my dark and light moments these past 5 years. All of them. I f*cked up an interview question.

“Now go sip a beverage and head out on a walk.”

It’s the second time in weeks the 20-year-old has publicly apologised after comments she made about Taylor made headlines. In an interview with the Guardian when she attempted to explain what it’s like being friends with Taylor Swift, she said:

“It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies … there are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.”

After many pointed out the comment could be offensive to people with an auto-immune disease, and questioned her bond with Taylor, Lorde apologised.

“I f*cked up & that was really insensitive. I’m sorry,” she tweeted.
