In an interview with the Guardian published this week, Lorde attempted to explain what it’s like being friends with Taylor Swift – one of the world’s most recognised and paparazzi-stalked celebrities.

“It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies,” Lorde told the publication.

“There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do.

“There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.”

The comment didn’t sit well with some on social media, who pointed out how offensive her words might be to someone with auto-immune disease.

And as a Twitter user pointed out, one such person could be Selena Gomez, who has long battled Lupus, one of the most common auto-immune diseases. She’s also a close friend of Swift’s.

Lorde, whose sophomore album Melodrama has earned critical and commercial success since it was released last week, addressed the controversy head on.

“I f*cked up & that was really insensitive. I’m sorry,” the 20-year-old singer, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, wrote in response to a fan.

It’s not known if Taylor has heard about the comment and if so what she thinks about it, but time will tell if Lorde will keep her spot in the squad – there’s less than a month to go until Taylor’s annual Fourth Of July party.

One person who has no doubt received her invitation is ever-loyal Swifty Ruby Rose, who savaged Katy Perry’s diss track about Taylor, Swish Swish.
