In her new memoir Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me, the 27-year-old Golden Globe-nominated actress has spoken about the heartache over the absence of her father singer Phil Collins during her youth. “I forgive you for not always being there when I needed and for not being the dad I expected,” she writes. “I forgive the mistakes you made. And although it may seem like it’s too late, it’s not. There’s still so much time to move forward.”

It’s a big message to tell your father in front of the world – but we guess something had to make up the pages of the memoirs of such a young person. Lily is the only daughter to her father’s second wife, American actress Jill Tavelman, although he does have four other children to two other wives.

“We all make choices and, although I don’t excuse some of yours, at the end of the day, we can’t re-write the past,” she continued. “I’m learning how to accept your actions and vocalise how they made me feel. I accept and honour the sadness and anger I felt toward the things you did or didn’t do, did or didn’t give me.”

Shockingly, she credits her past eating disorders with her father’s behaviour. “Not only did I start viewing myself differently physically, but I began limiting my happiness by controlling my eating habits,” she wrote. “I couldn’t handle the pain and confusion surrounding my dad’s divorce, and I was having a hard time balancing being a teenager with pursuing two different grown-up careers…Many of my deepest insecurities stem from these issues with my dad.”

Again, some big claims. Would you have released such confessions to the world? And what do you think Phil Collin’s reaction will be? Keep in mind Phil did release details of his infidelities via his memoir Not Dead Yet so perhaps this is how you do things if you’r part of the Collins bloodline.
