Oprah Winfrey’s a fan. So is Bella Thorne. And now Lena Dunham has documented the whole process – and we’re a little hooked. While we first started hearing about microblading last year, the idea of it did come with a few misgivings – as with most things that come with the term “blade”.
A semi-permanent tattoo using a microblading pen that draws on each individual hair to fill in sparse or thinning eyebrows, Dunham’s in-depth account (and video) for Vogue on how the procedure has saved her eyebrows has got us wanting more. Side note, it’s not scary at all.
Like many of us that did the majority of our growing up in the 90s and early noughties, Dunham was a previous victim of eyebrow over-plucking (and the resulting pain of trying to fix a past of wrongdoings). But after a receptionist at her doctor’s office alerted her to micro-blading, Dunham “became obsessed with the idea” and set out to give the treatment a trial.

Opting to get it done at the hands of Beverly Hills-based cosmetic artist Dominique Bossavy – described by Denham as a permanent-makeup pioneer – Bossavy custom-blends and compounds her own pigments and then uses tiny needles for small punctures. And while one of the key questions people ask when it comes to microblading is if it hurts, Dunham describes the experience as “less painful than a sunburn and utterly delightful thanks to Dominique’s heavily accented exclamations of joy: ‘Beaoooteeful! I am so excited for zees!’”
And the result? Dunham tells Vogue: “A mere 40 minutes later, when I finally sat up, I was too stunned to speak. On my face were two perfect brows, the same hard-to-capture brown as the hair on my head, multidimensional, thick in all the right places, giving my face a grounded seriousness I had been wishing for since that day in the bathroom almost 20 years ago.”
