He was one of the world’s best known and loved fashion photographers, whose famous January 1990 British Vogue cover helped launch the era of supermodels.
On Tuesday, the German-born snapper and film director Peter Lindbergh was farewelled in Paris, and his funeral was attended by many of the celebs he’d worked with over the years.
Cindy Crawford was there, accompanied by her daughter Kaia Gerber, both of whom looked visibly upset.
Also in attendance were Bella and Gigi Hadid, Anna Wintour, actors Isabelle Huppert and a pregnant Milla Jojovich, Naomi Campbell, Carla Bruni, Kate Moss, Salma Hayek, Julianne Moore, Bradley Cooper and many, many more.
No cause of death was given when the 74-year-old died in Paris on September 3. His career spanned over four decades and his work frequently graced the pages of high fashion magazines around the world, as well as being exhibited in the likes of Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Victoria & Albert museum in London.
His last big project before his death was shooting the September issue of British Vogue guest edited by Meghan Markle, including shooting portraits of Jane Fonda, Greta Thunberg and model Adut Akech.
Lindbergh was a staunch opponent of retouching in photographs, refusing to alter any of the photographs of his subjects, including Nicole Kidman and Helen Mirren, when he shot the Pirelli calendar in 2016.
In an introduction to his 2018 book, Shadows On The Wall, he wrote, “it should be a duty for every photographer working today to use his creativity and influence to free women and everyone from the terror of youth and perfection.”
Peter Lindbergh: Women’s Stories, a documentary about the photographer’s life, was released this year. Lindbergh is survived by his wife, Petra; four sons, Benjamin, Jérémy, Joseph and Simon; and seven grandchildren.
