The 2022 Cannes Film Festival opened at the Palais de Festivals overlooking the French Riviera today to a flurry of lavishly dressed guests for the Opening Festival Ceremony and the screening of Final Cut (Coupez!). The red carpet event is just the first from a scheduled 11 days with actress Lashana Lynch perfectly setting the sartorial tone in Fendi Couture.

Lynch is not expected to be starring in any of the forthcoming films but rather is in attendance as a guest. Her appearance comes off the back of her debut as the first ever Black female 007 agent in the James Bond franchise. She also recently made a cameo in Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness. The actress is slated to appear in The Woman King – a historical epic inspired by the true events of The Kingdom of Dahomey – in September this year.

Speaking in an interview on her James Bond role last year, Lynch said, “I am one Black woman – if it were another Black woman cast in the role, it would have been the same conversation, she would have got the same attacks, the same abuse. I just have to remind myself that the conversation is happening and that I’m a part of something that will be very, very revolutionary.”

The 75th annual Cannes Film Festival is expected to see red carpet arrivals from the cast of ELVIS including Austin Butler, Tom Hanks and Australian actress Olivia DeJonge. Margaret Qualley, Joe Alwyn will star in the premiere of The Stars at Noon and Alicia Vikander in Irma Vep.
