gagaalbummaingraziaIt’s official – October 21 marks the day Lady Gaga will drop the follow-up to her 2013 release ArtPop.

Gaga announced the news on Twitter on Friday, along with the cover art, which hints at a new direction for the six-time Grammy Award winning artist.

Her new album is called Joanne (it’s also the title of one of the tracks), a tribute to the singer’s aunt who died at 19 years old from Lupus, and in an interview with radio program Beats 1 on Friday, she explained how her aunt has been one of the strongest forces in her life even after her death.

“[Joanne is] the true heart and soul of the record” she said. “I returned to my home life and spending time with my friends and family and getting out of the mainstream limelight for a minute, [and] the experiences of our family and our challenges make us who we are.

“It’s everything about Joanne … it’s all the toughness of the pain of losing her that made us all strong and made us who we are. She is the woman of my past who is becoming and helping me bring more of my honest woman self into the future.”

She also revealed several exciting collaborations on the record, including tracks with Father John Misty and Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme.

Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, has been known as a persona for much of her career, but it seems Joanne (which is also her middle name) will see her reveal more from a personal point of view than ever before. For instance, she explained that the song John Wayne is about her “incessant need to run after wild men and somehow I get bored of the same old John.” Anything to do with her split from Taylor Kinney, perhaps?

The first release from Gaga’s fifth studio album, Perfect Illusion, dropped last week and was co-produced with Mark Ronson, Bloodpop (formerly Blood Diamonds) and Kevin Parker from one of Australia’s most successful exports, Tame Impala.
