It’s an awards show like no other. Two award categories – Best Actress In A Limited Series or Television Movie and Best Actress In A Film – resulted in a deadlock tie at the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards. While Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette tied for the former award, it was Glenn Close and Lady Gaga who drew gasps for the latter prize.

Close gracefully accepted Best Actress for her role in The Wife and acknowledged the tie-breaker win saying it was so nice to be sharing a stage with another actress in an industry who are used to pitting women against one another. Moments later, Lady Gaga was announced the tied winner for her role in A Star Is Born, and the room erupted in applause.

Gaga turned to her fiancé Christian Carino, kissed him and then turned to her other side and kissed her A Star Is Born director and co-star Bradley Cooper.

“Thank you Christian, my love… Bradley you are the love of my life,” Gaga began, fighting back tears. Cooper looked like this:

(Do you think perhaps he’s thinking, ‘And you’re the love of mine?’ Sorry, we’re getting away from ourselves.)

“It was one of the hardest things I have ever done,” Gaga continued. “To relive something that I was not quite sure I wanted to re-live. But I was able to be vulnerable in a way that I never have before because of that love and that trust. Thank you to my team. Thank you to my family – the Germanottas, the Italian immigrants in New York.”

At this point, the music started playing to signal Gaga’s speech time was nearly up. “It’s OK, I can do this with a piano background,” she quipped as the audience roared with laughter and cheer.

“But I want to thank one thing the most. I want to thank Life. I want to thank Life for all the experiences I had to draw from to become this role,” Gaga continued. “I would like to dedicate this award tonight to all people who have suffered from alcoholism and addiction or who have watched their loved ones suffer. I wanted nothing more than to show the truth and the power of this very heartbreaking dynamic. This is the true star of the film. The true star is not me, it is bravery and perseverance. Thank you, I love you.”

This is Lady Gaga’s first Best Actress award win. She took home the Golden Globe and the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Original Song for her hit track Shallow.
