If this headline shocked you, you’re not alone. Kim Kardashian West is studying to become a criminal justice lawyer and will sit her exams in 2022, she revealed in a recent interview with Vogue US. Before you roll your eyes, we think this is positive.
The 38-year-old reality star reportedly began a four-year apprenticeship with a law firm in San Francisco last American summer, around the same time she helped grandmother Alice Marie Johnson get released from prison.
Kardashian West wielded her power as one of the most famous women in the world to secure meeting time with President Donald Trump at the White House. Here she asked him to pardon 62-year-old Johnson who was serving a life sentence in a prison in Aliceville for her role in a non-violent, drug trafficking crime in the 90s. It was her first offence.
In a moving phone call in June 2018, Kardashian West told Johnson she was free; After 21 years behind bars, Johnson was coming home to her family. It was an incredible moment – and of course was captured on Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
It was at this time, however, Kardashian West says she knew she wanted to know more about the legal system in order to have a better grasp of what she was dealing with. “I had to think long and hard about this,” she told Vogue. “The White House called me to advise to help change the system of clemency and I’m sitting in the Roosevelt Room with, like, a judge who had sentenced criminals and a lot of really powerful people and I just sat there, like, ‘Oh, shit. I need to know more.’ I would say what I had to say, about the human side and why this is so unfair.”
“But I had attorneys with me who could back that up with all the facts of the case. It’s never one person who gets things done; it’s always a collective of people, and I’ve always known my role, but I just felt like I wanted to be able to fight for people who have paid their dues to society,” she continued. “I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more.”
Of studying the subjects, Kardashian West is seemingly coping like any other university student. “First year of law school, you have to cover three subjects: criminal law, torts, and contracts,” she said. “To me, torts is the most confusing, contracts the most boring, and crim law I can do in my sleep. Took my first test, I got a 100. Super easy for me. The reading is what really gets me. It’s so time-consuming. The concepts I grasp in two seconds.”
Her late father, Robert Kardashian was OJ Simpson’s defence lawyer. “My dad had a library, and when you pushed on this wall there was this whole hidden closet room, with all of his OJ evidence books,” she remembers. “On weekends I would always snoop and look through. I was really nosy about the forensics.”
