Kim Kardashian has always given her ex-husband Kanye West for kick-starting her high fashion career and for reinventing her into the style icon she is today: a woman who was awarded the Fashion Icon honour at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards, a woman who fronts the cover of the world’s biggest fashion magazines, and, perhaps most impressively, the woman whose name carries so much weight she can borrow none other than Marilyn Monroe’s $5m dress from a museum to walk the steps of the most prestigious fashion event of the year, the Met Gala.

Following Kardashian and West’s split in February 2021, the SKIMS founder admitted to being unsure of what to wear after years of following her husband’s lead — a habit that began immediately after they began dating in 2011, when West infamously threw all of Kardashian’s old clothes out, before buying her a brand new wardrobe.

However, until now she’d never gone into specific detail about how impacted she was at the time. In the latest episode of The Kardashians, Kardashian revealed she had “panic attacks” trying to figure out what to wear once separated from West. “I got to a point where I would just like ask him for advice for everything even down to what I wear,” she told her sister, Kourtney. “Even now I’m having like panic attacks like, ‘What. Do. I. Wear?'”

Kardashian went on to add that despite their relationship being over, West styled her looks for her debut hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, but when it came time for the WSJ. Magazine Innovator Awards in October – notably, after Kardashian had met her now-boyfriend Pete Davidson –  she was left to figure out her own wardrobe.

“I was like, how do I wear something that hasn’t been pre-vetted first?” she said. In the end, Kardashian opted to wear one of the dresses from her Fendi x SKIMS collaboration, which was skintight and dark brown leather. She paired it with matching gloves and Tiffany & Co. jewellery, leaving the back of the zipper partially undone to reveal a pair of snakeskin boots underneath.

Upon seeing the look, Kardashian revealed West called her to express how much he didn’t approve. In fact, he went so far as to tell her her “career was over” while comparing her to none other than *checks notes* Marge Simpson. You know, the… cartoon character.

“He told me my career was over and showed me a picture of Marge Simpson wearing something similar,” Kardashian said, leaving her older sister speechless. Later, during a confessional, she continued: “Fashion has always been something that I’ve always been really into. But I have never been the creative. I definitely see what I like but I have never really been the visionary.”

“I always just trusted in him, but it is not just about the clothes,” she added of West. “That was the last thing we really had in common. I was always the Kardashians with my sisters. Then I was Kimye. Who is Kim K.? That is the jump. How do I get there without Kanye?”

Of course, in the past year Kardashian has continued killing her looks both on and off the runway, proving she doesn’t need a man to help her dress. Though if her accessory happens to be a 6″ comedian with BDE who won’t tell her what to wear, that always helps.
