How does one upstage themselves year upon year on the Met Gala red carpet, especially when their last look literally broke the internet? For Kim Kardashian, who completely covered her face and entire body in a black Balenciaga gown for 2021’s event, the challenge is real.

But if the Kardashian internet sleuths have got their facts right, it looks like the SKIMS founder is going to pull it off. Instead of wearing Balenciaga again, as she’s been doing almost exclusively for the past year, Kardashian is rumoured to have asked to borrow a dress from a museum.

The piece in question? The iconic custom-made gold dress French fashion designer Jean Louis made for Marilyn Monroe wore when she famously sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy for his 45th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden in 1962. Yes, seriously.

The first clue came earlier this month when Kardashian admitted the dress she plans on wearing can’t be altered during an interview for the premiere of the family’s new Hulu show. ”It really depends if I fit into my dress, so I hope I’m going,” she told Access Hollywood at the time, adding, “I think it will be up to the last minute because it can’t be tailored, so I have to fit into it like, exactly.”

Monroe’s gown, which is worth an estimated $5 million USD boasts $2,500 crystals and was inspired by a sketch by American fashion designer Bob Mackie. It was famously so tight that the actress couldn’t wear anything under it and had to be sewn into the piece just moments before her performance.

Actress Marilyn Monroe sings “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden, for his upcoming 45th birthday.

Following those comments, Kardashian has been filming herself rigorously working out at her gym, including hitting the treadmill in a sauna suit (!) at 5:30am.

Furthermore, earlier this week Kardashian was spotted in Orlando, Florida, with her boyfriend Pete Davidson, where they were photographed leaving the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum, where Monroe’s dress is currently on display.

This prompted Kardashian TikTok fan @GayManWithASprayTan to post a video about the Kardashian Konspiracy Theory, saying it makes perfect sense that Kardashian couldn’t alter this dress. “This was an iconic moment in American culture,” he said, referring to Monroe wearing the dress and singing to the president. “Not even just pop culture, American culture.”

“Kim is technically the modern-day Marilyn Monroe,” he continued, echoing a statement Kardashian’s ex-husband Kanye West made about her back in 2013. “I have a love-hate relationship with the paparazzi, but actually I love them because they are empowering us,” West said at the time. “They are empowering us over Vanity Fair that want to say that Kate Upton is Marilyn Monroe. Kate Upton ain’t Marilyn Monroe, Kim is Marilyn Monroe. You know that. She was controversial. She [is] controversial.”

And, as if we needed more proof, Kardashian has said multiple times how much she looks up to Monroe. She even dressed up as the actress for Halloween in 2017, wearing a sequinned silver dress, fur stole, and gloves, as well as a blonde wig.

This year’s Met Gala theme is Guilded Glamour and if Kardashian pulls this one off, she’s most definitely on theme.
