When it’s a Kardashian birthday, you know it’s going to be a party. But when it’s none other than Kim Kardashian turning the big 4-0, of course, she’s going to go all out.

To celebrate the milestone, the mother-of-four booked a private jet and surprised all her closest friends and family with a trip to Tahiti where they reportedly stayed for six days.

But this wasn’t just the usual gang that we see on Keeping up with the Kardashians. According to E!, a total of 50 people were flown out of the states, which is… well, rather a lot considering the US has a ban on all non-essential travel.

“[Kim] chartered the Crystal Luxury Jet to fly everyone privately and they left LA early Tuesday morning, the day before her actual birthday,” a source told the site, adding that the birthday girl enlisted the help of a party planner to make the whole thing work. “They had multiple events to celebrate Kim turning 40. It was a mix of family, old friends and newer friends and they took over the entire private island for an incredible week of activities.”

“Everyone close to Kim from all aspects of her life were there,” they continued. “Kris, Corey, Kourtney, Khloe and Tristan, Kendall and Rob joined along with several girlfriends that she has known since grade school.” Notably absent was Kylie Jenner, who reportedly stayed in Houston, Texas with her daughter Stormi and ex-boyfriend Travis Scott.

Very quickly after the family started posting photos from their tropical getaway, the backlash began with many calling the group insensitive and reckless for travelling during the pandemic. Kim later took to Twitter to explain that she’d asked all guests to quarantine in the weeks leading up to the trip and revealed that everyone had been tested for COVID prior to leaving the US.

“Before COVID, I don’t think any of us truly appreciated what a simple luxury it was to be able to travel and be together with family and friends in a safe environment. After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time. We danced, rode bikes, swam near whales, kayaked, watched a movie on the beach and so much more.”

She continued, “I realise that for most people, this is something that is so far out of reach right now, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded of how privileged my life is.”
