Katy Perry has dropped the music video for her Taylor Swift diss track Swish Swish on the same day Taylor is due to release the first single from her new album.
Perry announced on Monday she would release the video sometime this week ahead of her gig hosting the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday.
Coincidentally (or not), Taylor announced on Thursday she planned to release her new single from upcoming album Reputation on Friday.
Is Perry is trying to get payback on Swift for stealing her thunder on the day she released Witness (Swift chose that day to make her music back catalogue available on Spotify) or is Taylor trying to distract from Katy on her big day, yet again?
Unfortunately for Katy, regardless of who is trying to play who, it seems Taylor will win this round of their long-running feud.
Katy’s Swish Swish video seems somewhat out of sync with the song itself, a supposed response to Taylor’s Bad Blood, which took aim at Perry.
The video focuses on a basketball game between the underdog Tigers (Katy’s team) and their fierce opponents, the Sheep. For much of the game Katy is hapless and bumbling, getting hit by the ball or falling flat on her face. While it’s in line with the slapstick and self-deprecating side of Katy we know well, her weak demeanour doesn’t align with the sassy and fearless lyrics of Swish Swish.
While entertaining, the Swish Swish video doesn’t pack the punch needed for a diss track, and will disappoint those who hoped Perry would roar back, not merely meow.
