After teasing her fans with a head of dark hair multiple times this year, Katy Perry has officially returned to the dark side—for real this time.
Debuting her new/old look at the Country Music Awards in Nashville Tennessee on Wednesday night, Perry wore a jaw-dropping custom Vivienne Westwood brown leather one-shoulder dress, paired with one of the designer’s iconic pearl necklaces. Her new head of hair was pulled back into a tight bun, showing off her huge blue eyes and stunning nude beauty look.
To prove she’s not once again trolling us all with a wig—each recent brunette sighting sent those who’ve long wished for her return to her signature dark shade wild—the singer shared videos of the process of dying her hair back to its brunette shade to Instagram. In the clips, you can clearly see the colouring going through her locks, marking the first time she’s been dark since going platinum blonde in 2017.
“I just think it’s time to give them everything they want 🤷🏼♀️,” she captioned the post, using a blonde-haired emoji with its arms in the air to mark her change.
Perry’s hair transformation comes at a similar time to other iconic celebrity blondes ditching the hue, such as Chloë Sevigny, Hailey Bieber and Gigi Hadid. The recent beauty trend even prompted one person to question on TikTok (and later a writer for i-D): “Is blonde hair cheugy now?” In the now-viral video, GirlBossTown host Robyn DelMonte notes, “Every celebrity and cool girl is going dark,” before wondering if she herself should be changing her light locks.
Perry’s hairstylist, Rick Henry, also posted a nod to the updated shade to Instagram, sharing a video with the caption, “She’s Back!!! 🖤🔥🖤.” She’s back, indeed.
