Prince William and Kate Middleton have finally released their wholesome Christmas cooking special, A Berry Royal Christmas, which the couple has been teasing on social media for weeks.

For the BBC documentary, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge teamed up with The Great British Baking Show‘s Mary Berry, who attended official engagements and helped the royals to prepare a menu for a charity event to thank and acknowledge staff and volunteers from charities and organisations who will be working over the Christmas period.

Though you’d assume there’s absolutely nothing scandalous to see here other than a few of Mary Berry’s questionable innuendos – she asked the future Queen of England if she would like to ‘squirt on a cake’, viewers were quick to notice an uncomfortable moment which shows the Duchess shake off her husband’s PDA while the group is sitting down chatting.

In the clip, which was naturally shared on Twitter, the Duke places his hand on his wife’s back and as she smiles she clearly twists away to make him take it off. The two then continue conversation as if nothing’s happened.

So what’s going on?

While it seems like an awkward exchange, the Duchess, who, it pays to note, is wearing a stunning festive red midi dress by Alessandra Rich, was likely adhering to royal protocol, which forbids royals from engaging in PDA in public at all – let alone on camera for a documentary that’s going to be broadcast to the world.

Protocol aside, a few Twitter users have pointed out that maybe the mother-of-three didn’t think the professional environment was the right moment to be showing affection for any couple. Back to the cooking we go.
