In 2020, London lost Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who famously relocated to California ahead of the pandemic, and now the city is about to lose Prince William and Kate Middleton, too.

According to The Sunday Times, the couple is planning to relocate from their London home at Kensington Palace to a new residence outside of the city, in Berkshire, where the Queen’s primary residence, Windsor Castle, is located.

According to the publication, the reason behind the move is similar to that of many city-dwelling couples when they have children: wanting to give their three kids, Prince George, who turns 9 in July, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4, more outdoor space. The kind of outdoor space many young couples can’t afford in the city, and that royals definitely can afford, but can’t really have either due to their fame and the population of London.

“The reality is they are quite confined in what they can do in London,” a friend told The Sunday Times. “The kids can’t go into the park and kick a football with friends. Their plan is to be there for the next 10 to 15 years and then move to Anmer [a country house in Norfolk] which is so special to them.”

George and Charlotte will leave their London prep school, Thomas’s Battersea, at the end of the current term, PEOPLE confirms, and will enrol in a school in the Windsor area. Though unconfirmed, it has been widely reported that the Cambridges will occupy Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate, very close to the Queen.

Although the children’s schooling was the primary reason to make the change, they will now be much closer to not only their great grandmother, but to their maternal grandparents: Berkshire is also home to Bucklebury, where Middleton was raised and where her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, still live.
