She may have spent the good part of 2016 touring with Jack Garratt, but music journalists have been monitoring news feeds about the girl with the freckles since Kayne West decided he needed to sign his back-up performer after one of his shows in Atlantic City in 2014.

Fresh from being named one of the new faces of Calvin Klein and ahead of her Splendour in the Grass set and Sydney and Melbourne side-shows with Garratt, Hill has dropped her first single of her yet-to-be-released album – a follow-up to her acclaimed EP Bloo. Titled Lion, the ferocious new track made his debut on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show and has animated visual to match. “Lion is one of the most aggressive tracks off the album,” says Hill. “It speaks rather shamelessly about my own tendency to shroud feelings of guilt in defensiveness.”

Shot by longtime collaborator Shae De Tar and animated by Adam Ross, the visual was shot in Hill’s hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. “The visuals focus on romanticism in the American Dream and the nostalgia of growing up in the desert.” Don’t be fooled either by the ethereal sound of Hill’s trademark falsetto in the first verse. It’s expected, yes, but it’s the chorus that’s not. And it’s incredible.

Do not miss her Splendour set on Friday 22 July. Mix-up stage. 2.45pm-3.30pm.
