After Empire star Jussie Smollett suffered a violent physical attack at the hands of two men this week, it’s been revealed he turned down an offer of extra security.

TMZ reports that Fox, the TV network that airs Empire, made the offer to Smollett after letters containing threats of violence and death were sent to the company.

But the 35-year-old declined, saying he didn’t want an entourage of bodyguards.

As we reported yesterday, Hollywood is in shock after the violent attack on Smollett, who was beaten by two masked men wearing ‘Make America Great Again’ hats.

Smollett was walking alone in Chicago in the early hours of Tuesday when the attackers, who have not been caught, put a rope around his neck, poured an unknown chemical substance on him, and screamed homophobic, racist remarks.

It’s understood he’s been released from hospital and is in a stable condition. Production on Empire has temporarily halted as the Chicago police investigate.
