Erin Brockovich. Her name is synonymous with both brassy outbursts and a leopard-print push-up. The heroine’s 90s office clerk style – made famous by Julia Roberts in the 2000 film of the same name – saw leather pencil minis, pastel blazers and an array of printed sheer blouses that could rival Carole Baskin’s collection.
Almost like characters unto themselves, Erin’s wardrobe staples played a huge part as the single mother went up against global corporation Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) after discovering the company was poisoning the city’s water supply. With local small-time lawyer Ed Masry at her side and as Erin got deeper into the human toll behind the case, her office wardrobe became more sophisticated by ridding the emphatic corsets in lieu of a transparent blouse. (That is, you could still see the aforementioned push-up, but it was thinly veiled.)
The role earned Roberts her first Academy Award – and costume designer Jeffrey Kurland a Costume Designers Guild Award in 2001.
In honour of Erin’s revamped office style, we’ve put together a luxury edit, an ode to the sheer blouse and leather skirt combo. Oh, and add this heel to ensure you will never be on the receiving end of a Brockovich outburst come your first day back in the office: “That’s all you got lady. Two wrong feet and f***ing ugly shoes”.
