Since the late 80s, Julia Roberts’ trademark bouncy auburn curls, million-dollar smile and scene-stealing doe eyes have been a fixture of Hollywood.
But over the weekend in Los Angeles, the legendary actress took cues from the beaches of Malibu by stepping out with a new buttery hair colour.
Roberts, 56, unveiled a vivid and lived-in honey hue at a fundraising party for the Democratic Party, which she attended alongside her long-time actor friend George Cloney, former president Barack Obama and incumbent POTUS Joe Biden.
As captured by her stylist Elizabeth Stewart, Roberts’ freshly-dyed golden mane added a luminous finish to her ensemble, which included a rather Bridgerton-approved custom Greta Constantine dress and black round-toe pumps.

Given the administrative setting, it was only fitting for Roberts to embrace her inner ‘Business Woman’ and deliver a lesson in blondenomics. As you may recall, the precarious cost of living crisis contributed to one of the biggest beauty trends of the past year: recession brunette. A concept born from inflation which compelled blondes to opt for more muted colours to extend the time between touch-ups.
If you, too, are looking to invigorate your hair in line with the changing weather, fortunately for you, Roberts’ colourist, Kadi Lee, has shared her tips.
“When making drastic colour changes, in this case from red to blonde, my approach is always the same—slow and methodical—while always keeping the health and integrity of the hair first and foremost,” Lee explains.
Her biggest tip? Go gently and in multiple sessions.
“Do not be pressured by drastic and unrealistic before and after pictures on Instagram. Those photos don’t depict the dozens of hours of work, and they are often heavily edited,” Lee says. “In real life, things take time. Really visualise your end result, and slowly and deliberately paint your way there.”
Roberts previously plunged into the blonde pool in 2018, and again previously in 2016 when she and Clooney attended the premiere of their film Money Monster at the Cannes Film Festival. Oh, how time flies!
