Julia Louis-Dreyfus has revealed that she’s been diagnosed with breast cancer.
In a Twitter note posted on Friday, the Veep and Seinfeld star wrote:
“1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one.”
But the 56-year-old funnywoman is remaining hopeful, and wants to use the attention on her to encourage research and funding to support others with the disease.
“The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union,” she continued.
“The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal healthcare a reality.”
According to HBO, Julia received the diagnosis the day after her historic Emmy win this month. She became the first person in history to win an Emmy six times in a row for the same role – senator Selina Meyers on HBO’s political comedy Veep.
The win means Julia now has eight Emmys to tie with American acting icon Cloris Leachman as having the most Emmys won by a single performer.
“This is and continues to be the role of a lifetime and an adventure of utter joy,” she said as she accepted her award. Backstage, she continued:
“I don’t know what to say about it other than I’m numb.
“I’m just incredibly honoured and amazed this has happened to me. It’s all very baffling and a sh*t ton of good luck.”
