John Legend says he didn’t plan to release his Love Me Now video days after the US election, but it turns out it’s exactly what we all need after an emotional and for many, devastating week.

Women, racial minorities, immigrants, the LGBTQ community and countless others are hurt and fearful after Trump, a man who has expressed degrading views about these groups on the world’s stage, was elected to be the 45th President of the United States.

So Legend’s new video, which focuses on people that despite being in difficult situations are full of love for each other and living life in the moment, is a soothing balm for our wounds and a reminder of the positivity and, as the title suggests, love to be found around us.

As well as some beautiful footage of the singer with wife Chrissy Teigen and their seven-month-old daughter Luna, the montage also shows couples in Orlando, Florida, the scene of the gay nightclub shooting in June that killed 49, the Domiz Refugee Camp in Northern Iraq, Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic and Standing Rock Reservation, where locals are fighting against the Dakota Access Pipeline that threatens sacred lands and the water supply.

On the day of the video’s release, Legend shared his disappointment over Trump’s election to America’s top office but said the love of his family had buoyed his spirits and hope.

“I wanted us to choose unity and inclusion over building walls and singling out ethnic and religious groups for hate and suspicion,” he wrote on Instagram. “I wanted us to choose progress over yearning for some long-lost mythical era when America was supposedly greatest.

“In this time of conflict and uncertainty, it’s clear that we all need more love. I find it in my family and in my music,” he wrote. “Embracing my family has made today full of love and light despite the bad news.”
