According to sources, Jessica Alba’s honest company has agreed to pay US $1.55 million to settle claims her company misled customers into thinking soaps and cleaning products didn’t contain a certain chemical, sodium lauryl sulphate, which later reportedly proved untrue and to actually be sodium coco sulphate. (We know, we’re not scientists either, but SLS – while common in a lot of household cleaners – in high concentrations can cause skin rashes.)

The Honest Company have agreed to pay those customers who feel they were misinformed by offering refund or honest.com credits. The suit also stipulates the company change their advertising.

It was in March 2016 that The Wall Street Journal outed the company in a report which noted two independent labs had tested Honest’s laundry detergent and found SLS. At the time, Honest hit back with a statement citing “the journal clearly had the goal of harming the reputation and good will that we are so proud to have built here.” They even went as far as explaining why they used SLS instead of SCS.

Overnight, the company issued this statement:

“We vigorously deny any and all allegations alleged in the lawsuit – specifically that any of our cleaning products contain SLS. However, given the fact that continued litigation could be protracted and expensive, we have settled this lawsuit to limit further costs and distraction to our business.”
