Despite their best efforts, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have struck out in love.

The actress and the former Yankees baseball player released a joint statement announcing their separation on April 15.

“We have realised we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so,” the statement reads. “We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children.”

Lopez is mother to 13-year-old twins, son Maximilian and daughter Emme, with her former husband, Marc Anthony. Rodriguez is father to daughters Ella, 12, and Natasha, 16, with his ex-wife, Cynthia Scurtis. Lopez and Rodriguez added in the statement: “Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have is to say thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”

The announcement comes almost one month after rumours spread that they had broken up and the pair admitted they were “working through some things.”

Lopez, 51, and Rodriguez, 45, had been dating for two years before they got engaged in March 2019. Despite making plans for their picture-perfect nuptials, Lopez appeared to hint in January there could be some cracks in the relationship.

“We postponed the wedding twice. We had planned what we really, really wanted to do, [but] I don’t know if we’ll be able to re-create that,” she told Elle. “We cancelled it, and since then we haven’t really talked about it. There’s no rush. We want to do it right when we can do it.”

She then admitted in the February issue of Allure that she and A-Rod had gone through couple’s therapy and she found it “really helpful.”

More to come.
