Josh Schwartz, the creator of successful teen television shows including The O.C. and Gossip Girl has revealed a fact that will blow your mind.
Speaking to Vulture, Schwartz revealed a then unknown Jennifer Lawrence auditioned for the role of Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl, ultimately played by Blake Lively.
“We did not realise this at the time, but Jennifer Lawrence really wanted to play Serena and auditioned,” Schwartz said.
“This story came to us secondhand, but we were told she definitely auditioned and was bummed to not get it.”
Back then Lawrence was yet to catch her big break in Winter’s Bone, and was so little known in the industry that Schwarz does not recall her audition.
“We can’t remember if we saw it or not. It was ten years ago, and she would’ve been how old, 15?”
(Close – she would have been 16 at the time).
As fate would have it Lively landed the role, and following her breakout role in Winter’s Bone, Jen went on to pursue a career in film rather than television, and won an Oscar just a few years later for Silver Linings Playbook. It all worked out just fine.
