If you weren’t one of the six billion views that tuned in to Netflix’s Wednesday, let us introduce you to your new beauty muse: Jenna Ortega. Whether she’s commanding the screen through her intrepid characters or serving modern goth on the red carpet, the 20-year-old rising star has quickly established herself as a trailblazing figure. One thing that’s hard to miss about the actress? Her knack for beauty. But while her choice of roles is anything but, Ortega keeps her beauty routine relatively simple—after all, stage makeup and special effects can be harsh on the skin.
“I do a lot of horror films, and my skin cannot stand stage blood,” she said in an interview. “I have instant breakouts every time. That’s why I started doing more than the bare minimum with washing my face and staying hydrated.”
“I use the Neutrogena Stubborn Texture Daily Cleanser because it gives me a deeper clean while still being gentle on my skin. It takes off all the stage dirt and oils, and I know my skin really likes it.” Packed with skin-smoothing acids (glycolic, salicylic and polyhydroxy), but gentle enough for everyday use, it’s an effective choice for combination skin.
For burgeoning blemishes, the actress divulges some Hollywood intel that she’s picked up from the pros. “This is a trick I got from set,” she revealed, letting us in on her hack for getting ahead of breakouts. “They would put tea tree oil on my face when I started getting pimples, and I could feel it working right away.” For her go-to formula, Ortega reached for Australian brand Public Goods for their antibacterial Tea Tree Oil.
To bring some balance back to aggravated skin, the Wednesday star swears by a cult-favourite face mask. “About once a week, I’ll do a face mask with Aztec clay and apple cider vinegar,” Ortega explained to ELLE. Hailed for its deep cleansing and pore-purifying properties, it’s the ultimate solution for congested skin. “It’s super strong, so I use it if I have aggressive breakouts,” she told Hello Giggles.
Unlike skincare, though, her perfume is where she takes bolder leaps.
As one of the seven new faces of the #DareInGrisDior campaign, Ortega is highly particular about the fragrances she chooses to wear. What she gravitates to most in the Gris Dior fragrance for La Collection Privée Christian Dior, is its enigmatic chypre scent, and its malleability.
“I love how androgynous it is,” she said. “I think as someone who’s very selective and very picky about scent, I need something that isn’t too distracting or isn’t too intense but ultimately feels clean, fresh, and new. That’s kind of what the fragrance is. I mean, even down to the bottle.”
Just like Ortega herself, Gris Dior is multifaceted and doesn’t give much away. Inspired by the luxury house’s signature grey, the blend is richly nuanced with its subtleties, anything but a simple mix of black and white. It boasts floral and woody notes that frame the chypre scent family, the result being a scent that is undefinable and, ultimately, invites wearers to embody whatever they desire and to claim what they want.
