Our new life coach Jenna Dewan launched her new book, Gracefully You, at Mr Purple on Manhattan’s Lower East Side this morning. And as it’s filled with details about picking herself up and dusting herself off post her divorce from actor Channing Tatum, she naturally had to field a couple of questions about heartbreak.

In recent interviews, the 38 year old dancer and actor has credited basil and crystals as means for reducing stress. Today, however, on a delightfully sunny, albeit brisk, morning on the 15th floor rooftop, Dewan went a little deeper. For her, part of healing wasn’t just surviving the heart whiplash, it was learning to thrive again.

“We’re all human. My advice is to turn inward and ask yourself, ‘What is this [relationship breakdown] showing me about myself and how can I come out of this a bigger person?” she told the press. “When you do that, it kind of takes the energy away from being about the other person or the break-up itself and focuses on yourself. At the end of it, you’re bigger, you’re flying higher and happier and you’ll manifest things that match you there. So put in the work.”

The notion of “doing the work” is something she writes in her book. “Acknowledge your emotions,” it read. “Meet with a therapist, look into breathwork, meditate, take walks in nature, and have wine with your friends. If you don’t transmute your feelings, you transmit them others — your child, co-workers, total strangers. … By moving through each day, I was able to gracefully make it to the other side. In the end, you will be a stronger, more expanded, even happier version of yourself.”

Of her breakup with Tatum, Dewan said the dynamic between her and her now ex-husband had shifted from “not working” to “hurting”. When they announced the end of their nine-year marriage in April 2018, the world was shocked but none more “blindsided” than Dewan herself to discover Tatum was dating British singer Jessie J soon after. “I was never challenged by anything more than during my divorce. Not only was I fighting an emotional battle of having to let go and move forward in my life, I was learning things about my ex most people wouldn’t have to face – and over the Internet, as it was happening,” she explained recently to Entertainment Tonight. “There I was, on a plane, alone, finding out about his new relationship. Choosing grace as I learned everything about my personal situation along with the rest of the world was really difficult.”

Now in a new relationship with American actor and singer Steve Kazee, Dewan is pregnant with her second child. Today she talked about how caring her boyfriend is. “He rubs my back. He’s the kind of guy that thinks about it ahead of time. So he’ll be like, ‘Oh I know what she needs when she comes home’,” she revealed. “He’s a rare breed, I don’t even know where I found him. He’s amazing.”
