James Packer has spoken publicly about his engagement and subsequent break-up with Mariah Carey, describing the whole thing as a “mistake”.

Speaking to The Weekend Australian, the billionaire businessman said:

“I was at a low point in my personal life,” explaining that financial issues were bringing him down.

“[Film executive, who Packer started movie company RatPac with] Brett Ratner put Mariah and me together. She was kind, exciting and fun. Mariah is a woman of substance. She is very bright.

“But it was a mistake for her and a mistake for me.”

There’s no doubt pop star Carey saw their relationship as a mistake too: earlier this year when asked if she kept in touch with Packer, she said:

“I don’t know where the motherf**ker is.”

Carey and Packer announced their engagement in January 2016, but by October they’d called it off, and a series of he-said-she-said pieces of gossip about each other were leaked to tabloid websites.

Mariah got revenge on her ex by recording I Don’t, a song that appears to reference him, with lyrics including:

Said you would always be mine

Feeding me nothing but lies

I was so gone, I admit it

Had me messed up for a minute

Just in case you weren’t convinced it was about Packer, at the end of the music video she throws a wedding dress on a bonfire. Clear now?
