Jake Gyllenhaal had appeared in just a handful of films when he landed a role alongside Jennifer Aniston in the 2002 romance drama film, The Good Girl. While in the past he has admitted to having a crush on the actress – really, who hasn’t? – the actor has since reflected on how they filmed those sex scenes.

Speaking on the Howard Stern Show (watch the interview below), he joked it was “torture” to film with a Friends star. He also reflected on why the steamy scenes weren’t exactly a dream. Even if it was with Aniston.

“Weirdly, love scenes are awkward because there are maybe 30, 50 people watching it,” Gyllenhaal admitted. “That doesn’t turn me on, so most of the time it’s oddly mechanical. It’s a dance—you’re choreographed for a camera.”

He added that the “pillow technique” was used. For those unacquainted with the movie magic, it basically acts as a buffer between two actors to create the illusion of having sex, without too much physical intimacy.

“I do remember a pillow…the pillow technique was used,” the Stronger star shared. “That was just pre-emptive and generally always used when actually in a horizontal place in that movie. Everything else was whatever it was.”

He continued, “I think that was actually Jennifer’s suggestion. I think she was actually very kind to suggest it before we began. She was like, ‘I’m putting a pillow here.’ That was all she said, I think I remember that.”

In a 2016 interview Gyllenhaal admitted to having innocent feelings for the award-winning actress. In a conversation with People, he said, “I will say, I had a crush on her for years. And working with her was not easy…I was–um, yeah. That’s all I’m going to say. It was lovely. It wasn’t hard, that’s what I would say.”

At the time Aniston was married to Brad Pitt.
