Isla Fisher’s speech as she accepted the Trailblazer Award at the AACTAs in Sydney on Wednesday night is making headlines around the world after she took the opportunity to slam Donald Trump and his wife Melania.
The Wedding Crashers and The Great Gatsby star started off with a very Australian, modest quip (“I really have to thank my fellow actors, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Margot Robbie and Toni Collette – all of whom were no doubt offered this award first and they couldn’t make it here tonight so, yay!”) before taking aim at the Trumps.
Isla recited a passage from a Michelle Obama speech – the same paragraph Melania Trump blatantly plagarised in a speech during the presidential election.
”I figured if Melania Trump can use [those words] and have success, I should try,” she said to uproarious laughter from the audience.
The wife of Sacha Baron Cohen then acknowledged her status as a ‘ginger’ as she delivered a searing burn to the US presidential election.
“I do need to thank Trump. I don’t think I’d be here if it weren’t for him showing the world that unqualified orange people can win things.”
Isla was joined at the award ceremony by her mother and Baron Cohen, who revealed on the red carpet that the pair fell in love in Australia 15 years earlier.
