Six times a year, it is a true privilege to watch on as Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri dreams up a deft and intricate collection which aptly challenges the concept of femininity while teaching us about the lives of other women. A staunch advocate for issues outside of the fashion bubble (remember the Pre-Fall 2023 show in Mumbai which celebrated Indian fashion design and Couture Spring/Summer 2023 which honoured African American pioneering performer Josephine Baker), if early hints are anything to go by, it seems this haute couture season Ms. Chiuri is set to champion the female athleticism of ancient Greece.

“In ancient Greece, sport and athleticism were integral to one’s education. The prevailing philosophy held was a healthy body was essential for citizens to fulfil their civil duties effectively,” Christiana Mitsopoulou, archaeologist and curator of the L’Olympisme exhibition at Musée du Louvre says via Dior’s social channels. “Within this educational framework, girls were also encouraged to engage in physical activities…reflecting the belief that women, too, could develop high-level athletic skills.

“[Back then] the athletic attire for women was a draped garment that fell above the knee, leaving one shoulder free,” she continued. “Female athletes—especially runners—were often depicted wearing such attire which was secured in place by s simple string.”
