Hillary Clinton has released her fair share of non-fiction books in the past surrounding her time as the former First Lady to Bill Clinton as well as on her experience in the White House. But in a first, Clinton has launched a fiction crime novel dubbed, State of Terror. Released this week, it was written in partnership with acclaimed crime author, Louise Penny.

While it is incredible to imagine Clinton dreaming up some far flung plot, the storyline doesn’t stray too far from what she knows and more modern historical events. It follows a former international media mogul, Ellen Adams, who is appointed U.S. secretary of state by Douglas Williams, a president whose candidacy she opposes. A terrorist attack takes places in cities across the globe, all seemingly linked. In a diplomatic race of life and death, Adams is forced to fly across the globe to meet with world leaders.

Think of it as a “Olympus Has Fallen” kind of book. And apparently it’s been released to an impressive reception. The New York Times has reviewed it as a “page turner, part sly, part sweet” and it appears to have surprised The Los Angeles Times’ journalist Paula Wood who said it was “actually good”.

State of Terror follows Bill Clinton’s own political-fuelled thriller novel, The President’s Daughter, which was written in partnership with James Patterson. The book was published just months ago, in June, which went on to become a best-seller.

As for the characters, the former First Lady nor her writing compadre Penny have confirmed whether they are inspired by real people.

“People can read into the book how closely certain events do or do not mirror her real life, which is part of the fun of it, I suppose,” Matt Latimer, a founding partner of the literary agency Javelin, told CNN

Happy reading!
