A new exhibition of striking Australian fashion photography by the German émigré Henry Talbot opens this weekend at The National Gallery of Victoria’s Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square, and delivers a fascinating look at the vibrant face of Australian fashion throughout the 1960s.

Henry Talbot: 1960s Fashion Photographer was curated from an archive of 35,000 negatives that Talbot gifted to the NGV in the 1980s and captures the city in the midst of a youth culture renaissance. Working alongside photographic icon Helmut Newton from a studio on Flinders Lane, Talbot’s work – with its distinctly international aesthetic – also helped to shape the visual identity of quintessential Australian brands at the time, including Qantas, Holden, the Australian Wool Board and Sportscraft. Some of Talbot’s work with these stalwarts of Australian industry can be previewed below prior to the exhibition’s opening on Saturday May 7.

Running in conjunction with the NGV’s landmark census of Australia’s fashion history, 200 Years of Australian Fashion, Henry Talbot: 1960s Fashion Photographer is accompanied by a stunning electronic catalogue and will run from Saturday until August 21.

With no price of admission, it promises to be an unmissable and a worthwhile investment.
