Much to our delight, Harry Styles has been popping up everywhere lately. To promote his new album, Fine Line, the British singer has been making the rounds doing interviews with the press, including playing games with his ex Kendall Jenner and, most recently, talking about playing games with his ex Kendall Jenner with Ellen DeGeneres.

During an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, for which the 25-year-old wore a bright green jumper, a pearl necklace and colourful nail polish, DeGeneres slyly brought up Styles and Jenner’s recent viral on-screen moment, which involved Jenner asking Styles to reveal which of the songs on his old album are about her (he decided to eat cod sperm instead of answering).

“So when you hosted for James Corden, your guests were Tracee Ellis Ross and Kendall Jenner. And you and Kendall are really good friends now, right?” DeGeneres asked Styles, to which he replied, “Yeah, we’ve been friends for um, a while now, yeah. Like several years.”

“That’s sweet that y’all are really good friends,” DeGeneres said, not acknowledging that not only did Styles and Jenner date in 2014 and again in 2015, but when they were famously photographed making out during a holiday on a superyacht, they were with DeGeneres herself.

Styles and DeGeneres deadpanned “Yeah” back and forth a couple of times, before DeGeneres went to transition to a different topic while at the exact same time Styles nervously laughed and accidentally continued the conversation. “Yeah,” he said again with a sheepish laugh, “I think so, yeah,” referring to it being a good thing that they’re still friends.

“Yeah,” DeGeneres said back, pausing instead of just changing the subject to make the moment awkward. “Right,” Styles said as he picked up his cup and sipped from it and the audience laughed.  “Right,” DeGeneres said. “Yeah.”

Segwaying into another touchy topic, DeGeneres went on to ask Styles if the album is about a break-up, referencing the widely circulated reports that Fine Line was written about French model Camille Rowe, whom Styles dated for a year until they split in mid-2018. Rowe even features on the song ‘Cherry’.

“So, word on the street is, this album is all about a breakup from someone,” DeGeneres said, to which Styles hilariously answered, “Ok” with his hand on his chin.

“So. The question is, is it?” DeGeneres laughed.

“I definitely write from personal experience, I think a lot of people do. I think if you want your songs to be honest and connect with people, it’s usually from writing honestly,” Styles said.

He continued: “Yeah, it’s definitely kind of about, I guess, what I was going through at the time – and that’s both good and bad. The thing with this album for me is, while I was making it, the times when I was sad were probably some of the saddest times in my life. But at the same time, the times when I was happy were some of the happiest times I’ve ever had in my life.”
