Harry Styles delivered some big truths about his past relationships this morning during his cover interview with Rolling Stone magazine. And, just like Chris Evans and Charlie Hunnam before him, Styles weighed in on his ex-boyfriend etiquette. “Certain things don’t work out. There’s a lot of things that can be right, and it’s still wrong,” he said. “In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the time together. You’re celebrating the fact it was powerful and made you feel something, rather than ‘this didn’t work out, and that’s bad.’ And if you run into that person, maybe it’s awkward, maybe you have to get drunk … but you shared something. Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it’s the best shit ever.”

The internet has been alight this morning busily working hard on theories on who Styles is talking about on his album, many arriving at Taylor Swift. And, granted his quote is a nod to Swift’s same sentiment she shared when talking about her inspiration behind her hit track Out Of The Woods, it may be true. Interviewing Swift in December 2014, she said the song is about “one of those tentative relationships”. “You know where you’re always wondering whether you’re standing on solid ground and always wondering if you’re on the same page as the other person,” she said before telling me the experience, even though it didn’t work out, wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

But it’s Style’s quote about a certain woman being a huge inspiration on his new album that makes me question if a brief relationship at 18-years-old was enough to warrant multiple tracks. While Rolling Stone’s journalist muses Styles is talking about Swift or Kendall Jenner, he misses one person in particular. There is a track titled Kiwi which could very possibly allude to his relationship with Australian/New Zealand Victoria’s Secret model Georgia Fowler.

The pair reportedly dated in late 2015 and even spent time staying at a suite in Babington House hotel in Somerset, England. According to a source at the hotel, the model and singer kept to themselves. “Harry wanted to spend some quality time with Georgia away from prying eyes,” they said. “They kept to themselves and mostly spent their time in their room and garden, ordering food to the room instead of eating in the restaurant”.

“She’s a huge part of the album,” Styles tells Rolling Stone of the mystery inspiration. “Sometimes you want to tip the hat, and sometimes you just want to give them the whole cap … and hope they know it’s just for them.”

Fowler liked Styles’s Rolling Stones cover image on Instagram this morning. A (digital) tap of the proverbial hat to their time together, perhaps?
