Hanson’s catchy, upbeat hit MMMBop was one of the biggest hits of the late 90s, catapulting the three brothers to super stardom and teenage heartthrob status.
But most of us didn’t realise when we were happily singing along to it in 1997 that the song is actually kind of depressing, and explores an existential question about the meaning of life.
“MMMBop is ironically happy (but) it says most things in life are going to fade away and most of the things that you think are important are going to be gone, all your friends are going to leave you, you’re going to be old and lose your hair, you are going to die so you figure out right now what’s important to you,” Zac told News.com.au in an interview this week.
“The only way you are going to keep those things is by actively pursuing them.”
In hindsight, the message was there in the lyrics all along. Take the first verse:
You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they’re gone so fast
Turns out those boys with the long blonde hair were actually pretty deep.
Zac, Taylor and Isaac are touring Australia this month. After playing Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday night they’re heading to Jupiters Hotel & Casino Theatre in Broadbeach, Queensland on Saturday and The Tivoli in Brisbane on Sunday.
