Hannah Gadsby is in a relationship with American director and screenwriter Jill Soloway.

Gadsby, who skyrocketed to fame in the US this year with her Netflix special Nanette has reportedly been dating the Transparent creator since the middle of the year.

“Jill recently went to Australia to meet Hannah’s family,” a source told Page Six.

“They don’t want people to know they are a couple … they are very private.”

The pair struck up a friendship when Soloway, who is gender non-conforming and prefers the pronoun ‘they’ instead of ‘he’ or ‘she’, reached out to Tasmanian-born Gadsby after seeing Nanette, and the two quickly became close friends.

Speaking at an event to promote their new memoir She Wants It: Desire, Power, and Toppling the Patriarchy in New York last week, Soloway said they were “so blown away” by Hannah, best known on home soil for her role in Please Like Me.

“We had breakfast … and became friends after that,” Soloway said.

“We realised yes, we both have a lot of things in common that we like to talk about that generally annoy other people. Rage, patriarchy, consent before the coffee comes.”

Before creating the successful Amazon series Transparent, Soloway was a writer on HBO show Six Feet Under, and won Best Director at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival for her movie Afternoon Delight.
