Neon is polarising at the best of times. Even for the most stylish amongst us, it’s divisive. And its latest foray back into the fashion scene has perplexed many. A lime green turtleneck? I would never! But, when it’s done right, it is good. Very good. And if there is one person can make (almost) anything look good – even neon – is Gigi Hadid.

Strutting through the streets of New York in head-to-toe acerbic orange (perhaps a play on Pantone’s Living Coral), Gigi paired the three-piece neon suit (replete with near-wardrobe malfunction) with equally impressive neon eyes in sister shade, pink.

Sweeping a shocking pink across the entire socket, makeup artist Patrick Ta kept the look softly smudged, almost like a dramatic smokey eye. He even smudged the hot pink shade under the eye, buffing it well below the lower lash-line.

The result was a wholly modern take on a smokey eye – perfectly pink and fluorescent. To try the trend at home, the trick is defining your eye first with a darker eyeliner, as to not wash out the eye (pink has a tendency to do this). Add some thick coats of an inky black mascara (or a set of falsies) and trace the shape of the eye with a black liner.

And the best part about neon beauty? It’s non-committal. Hate it? Wipe it off! Much better than that $400 lime green turtleneck, don’t you think?
