At the end of 2021, a beauty rumour of sorts was going around, documented everywhere from TikTok to trend articles: blonde hair might very well be cheugy.
It all began when TikTok trend forecaster @GirlBossTown’s Robyn DelMonte, on her way to get her blonde highlights touched up, realised en route to the salon that every major iconic blonde celebrity had been ditching their signature style in favour of dark or red hair recently: Gigi Hadid, Sophie Turner, Chloe Sevigny, Hailey Bieber, even Billie Eilish, who’d only just gone blonde—to name but a few.
Puzzled, DelMonte posed a question to her followers: “Is blonde hair… cheugy now?” The video instantly went viral seemingly confirming DelMonte’s theory. But just as soon as it started, the rumour was, thankfully, over when Hadid was spotted transitioning back to her signature shade after almost a year of auburn locks.
Fast forward a few months and the supermodel has gone one step further, transitioning away from her bronde hair and going full peroxide blonde. Spotted on a photoshoot in New York, the 26-year-old wore her freshly bleached locks pulled back into a long ponytail:
Hadid’s new do was actually first debuted on the Burberry runway in London, the final show of the autumn/winter 2022 fashion month season. But as she had her hair pulled back into a tight bun—and lost her eyebrows for the occasion, too—it was unclear whether the look was here to stay or simply a runway trick.
Thankfully, it appears we have a permanent blonde Gigi back to mark the upcoming Hot Vax Summer (for real this time ((please)), and simultaneously confirmation that blondes everywhere needed: no, blonde hair isn’t cheugy <3
