With her best friend Kendall recently taking the haircut plunge, we were wondering if Gigi Hadid might follow suit with a mane change too. Despite her demanding and dynamic work schedule, Gigi’s long, golden blonde hair generally follows the bombshell blow-out formula, with the occasional California-girl beach curls thrown in. So it was refreshing and surprising to see the model step out with a bouncy brand new look in London today.

Part Sandy from Greece, part Madonna from Desperately Seeking Susan, Gigi’s hair was curled into tight, springy curls sent directly from the ‘80’s. On set with Love Magazine for the upcoming Coach X Disney collaboration, make-up artist Lisa Eldridge seemed to be responsible for Gigi’s red lip and winged liner combination.

Following the shoot, Gigi stepped out onto the London streets fresh faced with her new curls still in place, proving that perms and Ray Ban Round sunnies are a classic street style combination worth trying.

Across the Pacific Ocean, another A-Lister apparently also got the tight curl memo – Jenna Dewan Tatum. The sometime-actress, full-time wife of Channing Tatum posted a picture to her Instagram asking her followers: “Anyone wanna bring back the spiral perm with me?”

However it’s not just Gigi and Jenna making a case for larger than life curls. From the air-dried texture at Louis Vuitton Cruise 2017 Rio show to the bevvy of designers before that keeping naturally curly girls Noemie Lenoir and Frederikke Sofie et al in tact on the Autumn/Winter 2017 catwalks – a perm appreciation campaign is upon us.

It’s perfect timing for Australians too, where the shift in the season offers an apt opportunity to shift away from our go-to beachy waves and pair our 70’s inspired winter wardrobe with a more polished, put together curl.
