Gigi Hadid was recently revealed to be the most popular model on Instagram in 2016, more than doubling her amount of followers. And she’s clearly got confidence in her place on the platform, because she’s just revealed she’s taking a month off.
Possibly following in the footsteps of her close friend Kendall Jenner, who recently took some time off Instagram, Gigi is doing a digital detox over the holiday season.
“I’m taking a month off, actually, during New Year’s,” she told US Elle this week.
“I’m not deleting my account, I’m just taking the apps off my phone. It’s empowering, not just for people in the spotlight, for everyone. At the end of the day I’m choosing what I’m showing you. A lot of the world feels so entitled to other people’s lives, which is so crazy.”
The 21-year-old, who’s had a huge end to the year by walking in the Victoria’s Secret Parade and winning Model of the Year at the UK’s Fashion Awards, isn’t concerned about her fans getting upset at the lack of updates from their idol.
“I’m going to take a break when I feel like it, and when I come back and share it with you, if you want to be supportive and still follow me, that’s great. But, if you’re going to be upset that I need to be human for a month, then maybe I don’t want your follow anyway.”
You could argue Gigi is setting a good example for her many young fans, encouraging them to switch off and spend time with family over the holidays without the distraction of technology. As her friend Kendall argued, it’s something we all should do from time to time.
“You start to engage in real life and how you have to deal with real people right in front of you, so it’s kind of really nice to be away from it even if it’s just Instagram,” she said on The Ellen Show during her Insta-break.
And just like Kendall, we’re sure Gigi will be back on Instagram once she’s had some time to switch off and zone out. Maybe we should all do the same.
