Gigi Hadid is the latest supermodel to have pledged her earnings from fashion month to fund charities and organisations in the Ukraine. “Having a set Fashion Month schedule has meant that my colleagues and I often present new fashion collections during heartbreaking and traumatic times in history,” she wrote on Instagram at the weekend.

“We don’t have control over most of our work schedules, but we would like to walk ‘for’ something. Following in the footsteps of my friend @micarganaraz, I am pledging to donate my earnings from the Fall 2022 shows to aid those suffering from the war in Ukraine, as well as continuing to support those experiencing the same in Palestine.”

She continued, “Our eyes and hearts must be open to all human injustice. May we all see each other as brothers and sisters, beyond politics, beyond race, beyond religion. At the end of the day, innocent lives pay for war- not leaders. HANDS OFF UKRAINE. HANDS OFF PALESTINE. PEACE. PEACE. PEACE. 🕊”

It comes after fellow supermodel Mica Argañaraz, who boasts over 387,000 followers on Instagram, shared that she would donate part of her earnings to the country last week. “I have to say it feels very weird walking fashion shows knowing there’s a war happening in the same continent,” she wrote to social media. “I will be donating part of my earnings of this fashion week to help Ukrainian organisations.”

Artistic director of Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia, responded to the harrowing developments at Paris Fashion Week overnight by paying tribute to Ukraine through his Fall 2022 presentation. In a statement published to social media, he wrote, “Because in a time like this, fashion loses its relevance and its actual right to exist. Fashion week feels like some kind of an absurdity. I thought for a moment about cancelling the show that I and my team worked hard on and were all looking forward to.”

He continued, “But then I realised that cancelling this show would mean giving in, surrendering to the evil that has already hurt me so much for almost 30 years. I decided that I can no longer sacrifice parts of me to that senseless, heartless war of ego. This show needs to explanation. It is a dedication to fearlessness, to resistance, and to the victory of love and peace.”

According to The Guardiana note was left on each of the 525 seats along with a t-shirt in the colours of the Ukranian flag. The Spanish-French house is currently sharing information on the war from Twitter.
