Press shots from the impending Gossip Girl reboot were released this week, creating a whole lot more buzz around what was already one of the buzziest TV releases of 2021. The shots feature the new GG generation sprawled across the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City—catnip to fans of the original series, which first aired in 2007 and finished in 2012.

The first Gossip Girl made global stars of its cast, including Blake Lively and Leighton Meester—and is likely to do the same for those involved in the reboot. But while the likes of Emily Alyn Lind, Jordan Alexander and Whitney Peak are unlikely to ring any bells, there is one familiar face in amongst the new lineup: 24-year-old Tavi Gevinson.

Gevinson skyrocketed to fame in the early 2010s as a teenage publishing prodigy, earning the media industry’s respect with her digital (and eventually print) magazine Rookie. Rookie became a resource for creative, angsty teens grappling with identity and searching for like-minded people online. Its editorial mix—fashion and feminism, before the combination hit the mainstream—paved the way for publications like the current iteration of Teen Vogue. Gevinson earned write-ups in The New Yorker and The Guardian. The clincher? She was only 15.

From Rookie‘s launch in 2011, Gevinson became a fixture on the fashion circuit and a budding media darling. That was until 2018, when Gevinson suddenly announced the magazine’s immediate closure. In the intervening two years she has kept a relatively low profile, pursuing acting—largely on Broadway. But all that is likely to change with the impending release of Gossip Girl. Details of her specific role haven’t been revealed, but she’ll be a core cast member and—if press shots are anything to go by—will win over the internet with her Rookie-esque outfits.

Desperate to start watching the new series? It’ll frustrate you to know that it was due to appear on screens this year, but has been postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. A specific date hasn’t been revealed yet, but at least we’ll have these BTS photos (and the rumours that Leighton Meester, Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick are making cameos) to sustain us until then.
