Fab Five: The Canvas Bag

Trendy and trending, these five canvas bags will make you feel like a natural woman, but with a high-end twist

If 2019 was the year of the straw tote, the 2020 is the year of the canvas bag. Natural textured bags have been slung across every shoulder, straddled décolletages and clutched from fingertips for the past two or so years, arguably the over-aching it-bag of the last few seasons. Rendered in raffia or strung from wicker, a straw handbag transcended its gone fishin’ days and beach bum-ness into the must-have accessory, with Loewe’s cult straw basket and Jacquemus hairy but handsome Baci Mini Bag leading the charge.

But, times are a changin’, or rather, texture is. While raw fibres remain wholly fashionable, fashion’s au naturale air gets an update: enter the canvas bag.

But this ain’t any old canvas library tote. This is a chic, leather-trimmed bag. Designers in their droves are canvassing tan-trimmed canvas bags; from broader carry all’s to messenger satchels, and belt bags to duffels, it seems fashion’s new BBF (best bag friend) is a canvas toted preferably trimmed in a rich tan leather. Snazzy additions include gilt hardware, chain details and on-trend logo embossing.
