A funny thing happened along the sides of Gucci’s Spring 2017 runway last night: usually demure show-goers dipped their smartphones, leaned forward and strained through atmospheric faux fog to take in more than the models’ phantasmagoric clothes.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better than Gucci’s recent explosion of dream-on bags, Alessandro Michele has served up a new slew of accessories set to become high-demand pieces for the brand next season – and they all come in the guise of luxe-looking kitsch costume jewellery, as piled on as the colours and patterns in his now signature-look ready-to-wear.

Jewel-encrusted knuckle-dusters spelled out exactly what we all thought of them. Fox faces peered out as choker motifs and from costume rings, eyes sometimes glinting with the cheek of a faux jewel, battling for attention with ostentatious satin handbags and a sea of wild sequins. Rustic-looking lions roared from rings, the balancing the OTT bling of Versace-esque bedazzled sunglasses.

Antique-style binoculars became chunky necklaces, banging lazily on models’ chests and earrings were so enormous, it became hard to tell where bird-like ear bling started and puffed shoulders began. Glasses sat atop satin headscarfs and hats knotted like turbans that are certain to be the headwear trend of next year’s Spring Races. Whether or not the strap-on studded shoulder pads will take off with as much momentum remains to be seen.
