In 1998, Darren Star adapted stories from New York journalist Candice Bushnell. In the raw submissions, Bushnell wrote about the romantic happenings of her life – and those of her friends – in New York City. The screenplay became revolutionary television as we watched Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, Charlotte York and Samantha Jones talk very honestly about their sex and love lives in the same way we would our own girlfriends.

Critics were split. In 2002, New York Times columnist critically described Sex And The City as nothing more than four “self-absorbed and vain” women living in “a time warp of free love without consequence”. The thing was, the only thing going backwards was that female journalist. Why couldn’t we indulge in characters who were a little self-indulgent? Characters who were each other’s soulmates and men were just people to have fun with? Twenty-five years on, the show has been immortalised.

Star went on to direct another New York-centric dramedy, Younger, which also became a huge hit and for a time there, the number one show in the US. In the same way we invested in Carrie Bradshaw, we were now invested in 41-year-old Liza who was pretending to be a 27-year-old in order to secure a job in publishing in the city. (Younger will return for it’s sixth season on June 13 on Stan.)

Now, Star is working on a new show, Emily In Paris, and we’re excited. British actress Lily Collins (who you will see more of as she plays Ted Bundy’s wife in Netflix film Extremely Wicked, Shocking Evil and Vile with Zac Efron streaming on Netflix now) is playing the lead. The plotline centres on an American woman who hails from the mid-West and goes to Paris for a new job. She is tasked with bringing an American point of view to a venerable French marketing firm and cue a million culture clashes – and of course a killer love story. “I’ve always been fascinated by the expat experience,” said Star. “I can’t think of anyone better to bring this beautiful world to life than Lily Collins.”

“All of Darren’s shows have deeply defined, greatly impacted, and undeniably helped me navigate my journey into womanhood,” Collins said. “I couldn’t imagine a more inspiring city to be our Emily in Paris home than Paris. What an absolute dream project!”

Collins took to Instagram to make the announcement. She will also be a producer on the show.

Filming will begin shortly with a series of 30-minute episodes scheduled to drop early next year. Follow @EmilyInParis for series updates.
