It’s a sentiment Ellie Goulding and Taylor Swift talked about last year; the musicians didn’t want to be defined by the men they did or did not date. They were more than that and established women in their own rights so enough of you asking prying questions, you journalists! Now, it appears Emma Watson feels the same way when it comes to promoting her films which in turn explains why we don’t hear a lot about her boyfriend (tech entrepreneur William “Mack” Knight, ICYMI).

I’ve noticed, in Hollywood, who you’re dating gets tied up into your film promotion and becomes part of the performance and the circus,” she told Vanity Fair. “I would hate anyone that I were with to feel like they were in any way part of a show or an act.”

“I can’t talk about my boyfriend in an interview and then expect people not to take paparazzi pictures of me walking around outside my home,” she continued. “You can’t have it both ways.”

The pressures of fame appeared to become all too much for the Beauty And The Beast actress and she struggled to grapple with her own identity as her star rose. “I’d walk down the red carpet and go into the bathroom [during the last few premieres],” she said. “I had on so much makeup and these big, fluffy, full-on dresses. I’d put my hands on the sink and look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘Who is this?’ I didn’t connect with the person who was looking back at me, and that was a very unsettling feeling.”

Watson is currently on the publicity trail for Beauty And The Beast. The film hits Australian cinemas on March 23.
